You won't find

Apparently, Halloween is a big deal around here.  Bigger than Christmas.  I find this interesting since I am a school teacher for a young grade and well, I am just now finding out.  There is a lack of things here and given that we have been here for a while, I could have had something custom-made sent from Transylvania if I so chose..  Anyhow, that brings me into my next rant.  What you won't find here.

It is funny how you don't miss things until you need them and can't find them.  Here, this is a daily norm and the human brain goes into extreme improvise mode.  Thank goodness we have lived in isolation before so these little hiccups don't seem as much of a inconvenience.

Maternity ward/birthing facility.  Yep.  If one becomes with child here, she may have pre-natal care but one month out from the due date she has to fly to Anchorage and stay until baby bumpkin arrives.

Fountain drinks.  Who drinks that poison anyways?  Well, I'll have you know we are not soda drinkers but from time to time a fountain drink is like a small coveted prize.  No fountain drinks here.

Car wash.  So your vehicle came in on a barge and now has a pretty salt shimmer, need a wash?  Think again.  Though we have learned that we can ask to use a hose at the school.  Yes!  Solved.

Pizza place.  Well, that may be a stretch for things to want but we do have the ability to obtain frozen zas for a very steep price or make them from scratch.

Okay, to balance the positive with the negatives.

We do not need a driver's license here, nor do we need to license a vehicle here.  We are so isolated, that the state of AK, says, no worries fellow Alaskans as long as you don't come into town and drive you don't need those things.

UPS.  We get packages pretty late in the evening.  Best thing ever.  Sometimes after a particularily draining day, a knock on the door and an armload later we have a shipment.  At the school, we even have things hand delivered to us while at work from a colleague that happens to do that as a side job.

The abundance of fresh seafood and generous fisherman.  No explanation needed here.

Lastly, we're lucky enough to teach and live in Alaska.
