For persimmons sake

Persimmon fruit.

Have you ever contemplated a baby's facial expression after it has tried something for the first time?  I have.  Tonight, when I tried a new taste for the first time I thought back to those babies.  They must have felt unsure of how to place the new mouth feel, taste, and category to file the new experience under.  Tonight that was me.  

We tried persimmon fruit tonight.  The flavor and texture were quite different than I expected.  It was odd and had the look of a tomato with a unique texture and a honey melon taste.  Our every other week produce order continues to make this possible, as our options are limited locally.  Thanks farm in Washington.

Aside from my food analyzing, school went well today.  Monday down, one more school day to go and a teacher in-service to get through on Wednesday.  The kids did really well considering the upcoming holiday and horrible weather.  It has been steady precipitation since Friday.  There have been a few breaks in the rain for say, ten minutes, but it has been nasty out.  The wind gusts get so bad that we can see our living room window bowing inwards at times.  Yuck.

With the rain and low visibility, no planes have been in.  One downfall of living on an island in the middle of nowhere is that when planes can't come in, you have what you have.  I always thought it would be kind of neat to be cut off from the rest of the world.  Like on that movie Storm of the Century.  Well, sometimes it is not.  On Saturday for example, there was a scheduled power outage that lasted for three hours longer than stated.  It was really isolating.  No computer, no phone, even the water next door at the school did not come out.  Now I have been without power but jeez, pair that with horrible weather and no way to communicate was just plain gross.

Lastly, inclement weather also brings with it another downfall with a surprisingly sunny side.  When crummy weather blocks the island's community members, jobs that people temporarily vacated remain open with work unfinished.  People here play big parts and everyone seems to have multiple jobs, so when folks go out of town and get stuck, some services stop.  On the plus side, people, services, and daily commodities are highly valued.
