What a day! This morning we made a stop at Sam's Club for frozen items, found and packed a cold/frozen bag and filled it with just under 50 pounds of food. Thankfully, the hotel we were staying at has a walk-in freezer for guests to use, so we stored our stuff there until it was time to go. When we checked in at the airport, the airline also had cold storage for checked baggage. Transporting perishable food from Anchorage to the island proved to be less of a hassle than we expected.

| King Salmon, Alaska. Our flight was supposed to be from Anchorage to Sand Point, then to Dutch Harbor... The pilot couldn't safely land on the first attempt in Sand Point because of crummy weather, so this was the alternate destination. Since the flight from ANC to SDP is over 500 miles, the pilot had no choice but to turn around for fear of running out of fuel. After a quick refuel and a leg stretch we made another hour and a half flight back to the island and landed. When we did arrive the clouds were so thick that land was visible for only a short moment (about a minute) before we landed. By the way, our bag of frozen items did not thaw(they were loaded on the plane at noon and removed at 6:00 pm) |
